Fox News

I find Bill O'Reilly excruciating. In fact, I pretty much find all of Fox News unwatchable. I should say that the same holds true for left-wing blowhards, so it's not necessarily a bias problem. Tonight I couldn't help watching that channel, though (I was at a friend's house, and it was on in the background).

Today the Fed lowered interest rates by 75 basis points, the stock market plunged something like 5% before rallying most of the way back, and the only things Fox News would talk about for nearly three hours were the details of Heath Ledger's tragic death. THE ONLY THING.

I remember being in Grand Central Station a few months ago on the day OJ Simpson was arrested for breaking into a hotel room to steal old mementos. That was all Fox News could talk about for an hour or two (I was waiting a LONG time for a train).

Fox News surprises me in that I am always unprepared for how much I can abhor it.

You are correct that Fox New's breaking coverage is awful. So is the breaking news on EVERY cable station. The same is true for local news and most of network national news. It should not surprise you that the majority of what is reported on the news is not handed down by some corrupt tabloid executive, but determined, rather, by ratings. What you’re seeing is what viewers want. What SHOULD surprise you is that your (and my) tastes are in the minority. For example, I think Ugg boots and leggings as everyday attire are absolutely ridiculous, but clearly a lot of people disagree with me. That doesn’t mean Ugg makes a bad product. In fact, Santa brought me a pair of their slippers…they are fantastic; I just don’t wear them out of the house.

Some (*some*) of FNC’s regular programming is excellent. Neil Cavuto is consistently chosen by his peers as THE top business reporter in the nation. His show is fantastic. Brit Hume’s hour is very good. Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace is also, in my opinion, consistently the best Sunday morning news show. True, FNC is right of other mainstream media sources. Most of this *bias* shows up in their commentators who are hired specifically because of their views (just like Tucker Carlson, etc. on other channels). In my opinion, most of the anger at FNC is due to the fact that (1) they have hired especially talented commentators on the right and the best they can recruit from the left are warm bodies (Alan Colmes is a moron, for example) and (2) FNC has outperformed all other cable news.

I share your disgust for O’Reilly. Sean Hannity and others are also very bad. I just suggest you pick your programming more carefully. I would hate for you to miss out on a comfortable pair of Uggs just because other people are insane enough to wear them on the street.
